Oracle Solaris Containers made their first appearance with the release of Oracle Solaris 10 OS. Now, in Oracle Solaris 11 Express, various enhancements and features have been added that improve and extend the Oracle Solaris Zone model. The Apache 2-licensed OpenDocument Java Library (ODFDOM) has been released with a number of enhancements, including ODF validation; full Maven support; OdfPackageDocument package level document base class that enables saving of all sub documents; JDK XPath expressions can now include any user/custom XML loaded as part of the ODF XML or that has been added to the DOM during run-time; correction of the earlier design assumption that every high level object inherits from a DOM element; plus various library updates.

The white paper "How to Track Your Oracle Sun System Assets by Using RFID" explains the workings of RFID technology, citing the contest for which Oracle's RFID tags were developed and noting the standards they adhere to, with examples of how users can leverage them to augment existing IT asset lifecycle management. With the newly announced Sun Fire x86 Clustered Systems customers can avail themselves of solutions that have recently garnered five world records. Oracle Solaris Studio 12.2 introduces two new features: Discover, which detects memory leaks, and Uncover, which measures code coverage in an application. These features are explained in brief in the "Compile My Code" blog. The Openomics blog post "Performance monitoring using hardware counters: Releasing HAR 2.0" observes that, Hardware Activity Reporter (HAR) -- relatively little used since the release of Solaris 10 OS -- has returned to favor with version 2.0. HAR combines low-level counts into higher-level metrics more useful to application programmers, such as CPI, FLOPS, MIPS, address bus percentage utilization, cache miss rates, branch and branch miss rates, and stall rates. Oracle reports that the Oracle Financial Services Profitability Management solution running on the Oracle Exadata Database Machine computed profitability for 172 allocation rules across 250 million accounts and more than 1 billion transactions in only 4 hours and 45 minutes. These results, Oracle contends, demonstrate the practical possibility of generating detailed profitability reports at the account level on a daily, even intra-day basis. The performance testing was performed using a full-rack Oracle Exadata Database Machine running Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Application Clusters. The application tier was installed on Oracle's Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 server running Oracle Solaris to drive the load.

Commenting on the PartnerNetwork (OPN) Specialized the VAR Guy opines that the effort is taking hold with channel partners, given that Oracle now has 1,000 specialized channel partners, a figure that, according to Channel Chief Judson Althoff, will surpass 2,000 specialized partners by the time Oracle wraps up its fiscal year 2011 in May. Althoff also shared with the VAR Guy the news about an aggressive ISV (independent software vendor) strategy that will surface in Fiscal 2012. With the release of Oracle Linux 5.6, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel has become the default kernel for customers with an Oracle Linux support subscription. Currently, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is available only for the x86_64 platform. The Oracle Linux 5.6 also includes the Red Hat compatible kernel with critical bug fixes from Oracle. This kernel can be installed directly from the DVD or from ULN if you're an Oracle Linux support customer.
